Poor Appliance Performance

Poor appliance performance is often a symptom of hard water and other water quality issues. The high concentration of minerals that cause hard water also cause scale deposits to build-up in the plumbing and appliances like the water heater, dishwasher, washing machine, and coffee maker. The limescale build-up can clog the water pump and accumulate on the heating elements decreasing appliance performance. In addition to poor appliance performance, the scaling causes appliances to break-down more often and reduce their useful life, requiring earlier appliance replacements.

Hard Water Limescale Deposits, ocean breeze flWashing Machine

The water hardness causes limescale deposits to build-up in the washing machine, water pump, and plumbing. This then gradually degrades performance to increase water and detergent consumption. The higher concentration of minerals makes it more difficult for the detergent to break-down. Hence, the washing machine uses more hard water to dissolve detergents, which results in more scaling. Because hard water minerals also reduce efficiency and cause colors to fade, consumers often add more detergent, which further degrades appliance performance.

Dishwasher

Hard water scaling also degrades the performance of your dishwasher. It’s also the reason that glassware, dishware, and silverware are dull and spotty after washing.  The dishwasher will not be able to clean effectively, and you may notice food stains and clumps of detergent on silverware and dishware. Scale deposits also build-up in the water pump, heating element, and plumbing, which increases wear and tear on internal parts resulting in more frequent repairs and premature failure that will require you to replace the dishwasher more often.

Water Heater

The water heater is one of the most expensive home appliances and is severely impacted by hard water. The limescale deposits accumulate on the heating element, which reduces its effectiveness, wastes energy, and causes the appliance to fail prematurely. High concentrations of iron and manganese can cause metal fittings and other internal components to corrode and rust, resulting in water leaks and appliance replacement.

Coffee Maker

Hard water will also negatively affect the performance of your coffee maker. The scale deposits accumulate on the heating element and thermostat, making it harder for the appliance to reach the desired temperature, so your coffee may be warm instead of hot. It can also affect the taste of your coffee. Hard water increases the wear and tear on internal components requiring more frequent appliance replacements.
