9 Easy Ways to Use Less Water
While the earth’s population has grown, the amount of water on it has not. We have a lot more people now vying for a vast but limited supply of water. For this and other reasons, it’s a good idea for us to become more water-conscious and do what we can to help conserve this resource that is the very foundation of life.
Atlantic Coast Water Clinic of South Florida would like to share nine easy tips to reduce water usage while still having plenty of it for drinking, cooking, bathing, and other needs. These tips will help conserve our planet’s water and save you money at the same time.
Some quick facts
- The average U.S. home uses 320 gallons of water each day.
- Water-saving appliances can save a family $170 a year on water bills.
- Nearly a third of all water used in America is used to water lawns – a staggering nine billion gallons a day.
- While 60% to 70% of our bodies are comprised of water, we can only last about three days without consuming it in food or as liquid water.
How to use less water
Here are some tried-and-true methods for decreasing your water usage levels.
-
Fix leaky pipes
Repairing leaks in the plumbing system can cut about 10% off water bills, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
-
Think Energy Star
When buying new appliances, look for the Energy Star seal. Energy Star water appliances typically use a fifth less water than standard appliances. That adds up pretty fast.
-
Reduce shower time
You’d be surprised at how much of a shower you can get in under ten minutes. See if you can keep it around that time and avoid the long, soaking 30-minute extravaganzas.
-
Speaking of showers: showerheads
Save even more water (and money) in the shower with a water-efficient showerhead. These products are widely available and can reduce water use by as much as 90%.
-
Install modern, efficient toilets
Today’s water-greedy toilets use a little over a gallon of water per flush. Toilets made before the mid-1990s used about two and a quarter gallons. The math is easy on this one.
-
Water your yard a little less
The average household can save around 10% on its water bills simply by using 5% less water to water the lawn and garden.
-
Reduce washing machine water waste
Most washing machines let you set their water levels. Always remember to set the level for the size of the load you’re washing instead of just running everything on “full.”
-
Look into faucet aerators
Aerators on the faucets throughout your home can save as much as 700 gallons of water a year.
-
Support companies and organizations that watch their water
Many businesses, nonprofits, and other enterprises are committed to conserving water. Consider supporting them.
